To produce Cultivated Meat, muscle stem cells are extracted, cultivated and then transferred to a bioreactor for myogenesis. There, the cells are supplied with culture media and finally processed further.
As in other large-scale cell culture applications, the bioreactor plays a crucial role. Hygienic fittings, valves and control systems are essential for sterile media channelling, precise process control and reliable scaling.

In the upstream process, animal cells are supplied with nutrient-rich cell culture medium in bioreactors.
Setting the optimum conditions within the bioreactor is a key requirement for producing the maximum possible quantity of the required biomass. Important process parameters such as pH value, temperature and oxygen concentration must also be precisely controlled. The subsequent multiplication takes place using batch, fed-batch or continuous processes.

In the downstream process, the biomass obtained in the upstream process is first harvested and separated from the culture medium. High product purity and consistent quality must be ensured within this process step.

The cells obtained are then further processed by adding fillers/binders to create the required structure, texture and shape of the final product.
