Las válvulas de globo son ideales para ciclos rápidos, altas temperaturas y para aplicaciones de regulación. Aunque se utilizan con frecuencia para el control del vapor y en el tratamiento de agua y aguas residuales, pueden emplearse en una gran variedad de aplicaciones dentro de los procesos industriales, incluso en aplicaciones estériles e higiénicas de la industria farmacéutica, alimentaria y biotecnológica.

Las válvulas de globo son muy apropiadas para controlar y regular líquidos, gases o vapores que sean puros desde el punto de vista mecánico y neutrales o ligeramente agresivos desde el punto de vista químico.

En estas, una junta plana generalmente de PTFE presiona contra un asiento de sellado y bloquea así el caudal. Se distingue entre válvulas de asiento recto y de asiento inclinado. La válvula de globo se suele usar con diámetros nominales grandes y también está disponible en diseño de 3 vías, por lo que resulta muy apta para tareas de mezclado o de conmutación. Aunque la solicitación de la válvula sea altísima por las elevadas velocidades de flujo y por la frecuencia de los ajustes en la regulación, es preferible el uso de las válvulas de globo de asiento recto porque consiguen que la fuerza actúe sobre el husillo de válvula de manera más uniforme. Las válvulas de asiento inclinado son más ligeras y compactas y presentan un valor de flujo (valor Kvs) comparativamente superior. Todos los diseños, incluso en sus versiones estándar, son aptos para una temperatura del medio de hasta 180 °C y para presiones de trabajo de hasta 40 bar. Los diseños modificados no tienen ningún problema para soportar temperaturas de hasta 300 °C. Las buenas propiedades mecánicas de las válvulas de globo, derivadas de su diseño, las hace especialmente aptas para grandes cantidades de ciclos y para tareas de envasado y dosificación. También son la primera opción para la generación y distribución de vapor industrial o estéril.
